We need to move, but we have to reuse. Now what?
By Office Interiors President, Bill Coons
When Innotrac moved to their new full-floor office space in Johns Creek Technology Parkthey wanted to provide their employees with a “best in class” working environment. However, starting from scratch with new furniture selections wasn’t an option as they already had a large number of existing workstations, seating, and casegoods of varying quality and performance levels, and, like most clients, a limited budget. As a solution and as a part of our service offering, Office Interiors was able to help this client identify their best reuse plan, one that retained the right portion of their existing furniture and maximized the budget remaining for new high performance products which would truly optimize the final work environment.
By dismantling, reconfiguring, and reinstalling 75 existing, high-quality workstations, Innotrac was then able to reallocate budget dollars to improve their employees’ environment with the purchase of new, state-of-the-art, high performance task seating from Humanscale. Other ergonomic tools included new articulating keyboards and monitor arms that provided increased work surface areas and comfort – important factors in improving employee satisfaction, efficiency, and productivity.
Reusing existing furniture can certainly have limitations when designing a new space. But with today's many refurbishment options (reupholstery, electroplating, refinishing, upholstery cleaning, etc.) reuse, when combined with good design, can be more than just an affordable approach for furnishing solutions. And although reuse does not qualify for LEED certification, it is still a great option for a green conscious design for a new space.
